The Art of Showing Up

The older I get, the more I realise how fundamentally important it is to show up in our lives.

For most of us, our lifestyle doesn't support us to live this way. And it’s a nebulous concept to begin with.

I sat down to try and describe what it means to ‘show up’ in the hope that it might be a prompt that moves us closer to fully living and enjoying our lives.

Share which numbers resonate for you - and if you have any to add please do so and we'll keep numbering!

Showing Up means -

  1. Being an active and intentional participant in your life.

  2. Being present in your body language, the quality of your listening and of your words.

  3. Knowing what is most important at any given time.

  4. Being sufficiently in control of your attention that you’re able to stay present - not retreating into distraction, self-focus or solutions.

  5. Knowing and managing your ‘Kryptonite’ that lures you away from being fully present. (Think Social Media, TV, busyness...)

  6. It means being in your life rather than managing or perfecting it.

  7. It means living with clear priorities and a connection to your own internal compass, rather than outsourcing your values to what others will approve of.

  8. Making choices - showing up for what matters, not showing up for everything.

  9. Being powered from within and having a healthy independence from the validation or influence of others.

  10. Bringing your gifts, skills and talents to the table, regardless of how imperfect or undeveloped they are.

  11. Being compassionately aware of others, how you impact those around you, and containing your judgement of others.

  12. Being able to hold your own imperfections with kindness and the vulnerability to share them as appropriate. It means letting go of the need to be defensive.

How do you Show Up in your life? And what gets in the way?
