Slowing Time Down

I’m listening to an interesting audio book at the moment called Off the Clock by Laura Vanderkam and learning, among other things, about how the brain stores our memories.

Apparently, the reason as we get older that time seems to go faster is because we don’t usually have as many unique experiences. We tend to have the same (or similar) experiences over and over again, and our brain telescopes or stacks those memories together creating the sense of having fewer memories.

When we’re younger, more things are new and we’re creating more unique memories that are stored individually, and these unique memories makes time feel longer rather than shorter.

So, apparently if we want to ‘expand time’, we need to create unique experiences, and think of our brain as asking ‘What’s different about today, this weekend, this week’ – because those unique experiences are the key to creating more memories, slowing down our experience of time and making life feel fuller.

Vanderkam encourages us to look for ways to create unique or new experiences, even in small ways.

So, as we head into the weekend, I’m thinking about what we can do to create a new experience.

How about you. What’s on for your weekend? Can you create a new experience?
